PROJECT: Quick, 3D study models, mockups and prototypes
for product development.
CLIENT: Arc Second
Often the fastest way to evaluate an idea is to make a crude—even
ugly—mockup and just try it. You learn and you try again, until
you get it right. In the case of Arc Second, we developed several
study models exploring how to hold and interact with their revolutionary
handheld 3D digitizing device.
Using lightweight modeling foams, we made dozens of mockups to test
which configuration of grip, trigger and interface offered the best
use. These mockups were then evaluated by an ergonomics specialist from the O.S.U. Ergonomic Department.
Though they looked rough, they quickly gave us the information we needed.
If we had made fully developed prototypes of each design, it would
have added months to the project. These rough mockups gave us our answers
in just days and saved the client time and money.
