PROJECT: Fully engineered product development
CLIENT: Mr. Heater
Often one of the biggest engineering challenges during development is packing all the
necessary components into small spaces. Mr. Heater asked us to design
a portable gas heater with several new features, packaging the parts
in the smallest possible size.
To accomplish this we first created engineering 3D CAD models of all the internal
components in a flexible CAD assembly. This allowed us to optimize
the fit of the components and the heater’s BTU output. Further,
based on our experience with forced and convective airflow, we created
internal baffling and ducting to keep the cabinet cool. During this stage we also simplified the assembly sequence to allow
the combustion and fan sub-systems to be tested prior to final assembly. The CAD models were then used by designers to explore aesthetics
and other design details.
By optimizing assembly, we were able to significantly reduce manufacturing
costs for Mr. Heater and substantially increase the product's performance.
