CLIENT:  Exceptional Innovation

Exceptional Innovation, a developer of high-end “smart home” products, challenged us to package their electronics into elegant forms that are visually appealing and highly functional. For their LifePoint touch panel devices, (which control home, automation, lighting, HVAC, etc.) we developed a mounting component, or “back box,” that installs into any wall in a standard home. The back box can be configured to work in a new build, or as a retrofit in a remodeled home, allowing any of the LifePoint devices to be installed or removed with ease. 

The back box is also a key component in the cooling system for each LifePoint device. Since the touch panels are also high-power computers, they tend to get hot. Our thermo management solution pulls fresh air into the unit and forces warm air back into the room. Through much testing, we developed a thermo management solution that is very efficient, and also very quiet.

We also worked on the devices themselves. We integrated elegant light-piping to illuminate the controls and numerous touch-sensitive buttons and sliders into the faces and sides of the units. Because every LifePoint device fits into a standard back box, the total package had to be quite small. Through considerable creative thinking, we were able to maximize the available space within each unit and achieve our client’s objectives.
