Patients with diabetes and accompanying diabetic neuropathy or peripheral arterial disease are at risk for developing diabetic foot ulcers. These ulcers pose significant health risks for patients, including the risk of amputation and mortality due to downstream complications. Treatment is possible if ulcers are caught early, but proper daily visual monitoring is required.
When Empo Health reached out to Priority Designs, they had been developing a device that aimed to provide regular visual inspections and included remote monitoring for healthcare providers. While the device had the potential to benefit patients significantly, it presented a set of challenges to overcome such as determining the ideal placement for the device, seamlessly integrating all the necessary components, and maintaining a sleek and visually appealing design.
This collaboration spanned user research, industrial design, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, user interface, and prototyping. The goal was to develop an improved device that is unintrusive, low-profile and avoids disrupting a patient’s daily routine.
Extensive user research, iterative design tweaks, and the creation of sample prototypes resulted in a monitoring device cleverly designed to resemble a bathroom scale. By seamlessly integrating into the users’ daily routines, the device facilitated convenient and effortless monitoring, ultimately improving health outcomes and patient well-being.
