Blending Hard and Soft Goods Technologies
Our soft goods design specialists blended our hard and soft goods design capabilities when creating this therapeutic heat pad line for Homedics.
Generally, heating pads look like blankets and are often designed for the elderly who have historically driven sales of these products for many decades. Homedics saw an opportunity to reach a wider category: baby boomers who don’t identify themselves as “elderly,” but may still need a heating pad, and younger consumers with sports injuries. They asked our design team to help them create a line of heating pads targeted, overall, at younger buyers.
Providing Homedics with user interface options
Our designers and engineers created two different types of user interface designs with consideration of electronics cost and market segmentation. The high-end version had an athletic focus utilizing a stop watch like LCD and push buttons control. The athletic pad featured brighter, sports-oriented colors promoting a focus on youth and activity. The entry level design had a broad home health care appeal using a lower cost turn knob and LED controller. It featured more subtle applications of color and simpler controls.
The Result
These products were very successful for Homedics and helped them increase market share in the therapeutic home health care market.
