Successful Partnership

CLIENT: Nike Golf

SERVICES: Strategy, Design

Nike Golf and Priority Designs continue their partnership with the launch of the Nike VRS Covert 2.0. Building on the success of the original VRS Covert Driver, Priority Designs and Nike Golf’s design teams worked together to bring refined, iconic design, and technological advancements to meet the demands of Nike’s tour players and amateur athletes. Through months of design conceptualization, 3D modeling, and design refinement, the Nike VRS Covert 2.0 is bigger, faster, and longer than the original VRS Covert Driver.

High Speed Cavity Back

Nike and Priority looked to enhance the tour-proven success of the industry-changing VRS Covert Driver, which was the world’s first to feature conforming High Speed Cavity Back technology. The High Speed Cavity Back technology redistributes weight to the heel and toe allowing for increased distance and more stability across the face of the driver. The VRS Covert 2.0’s Fly-Brace technology ties the sole to the crown, allowing more energy to be transferred from the body of the club to the face at impact.

A challenge in golf equipment design is to communicate and embody the club’s technology, successfully marrying form with function. The visual design execution of the cavity features polished texture treatments and a white core, bringing high visibility to the performance features of the club. Another design challenge was to properly reduce and distribute the golf club’s weight, allowing for an increased size of the NexCOR face (15% larger in the VRS Covert 2.0 Tour driver and 7% larger in the VRS Covert 2.0 driver).

Flex-Loft Engineering

The combined engineering effort from the Nike Golf and Priority Designs team, on the original patented Flex-Loft system, continues to be featured on the VRS Covert 2.0. The Flex-Loft system allows for intuitive customization adjustment to match each player’s swing mechanics. Athletes can adjust lofts from 8.5 to 12.5 degrees, while independently modifying for three different face angle positions to optimize launch and spin conditions for maximized distance and accuracy.

Driving Innovation 2.0

The VRS Covert 2.0 delivers more forgiving distance, faster ball speed, and the intuitive Flex-Loft customization system to meet the swing needs of every athlete. It has received a Gold in Golf Digest’s Hot List, and Nike’s staff athletes Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel powered their way to victories at the Australian Open and Alfred Dunhill Championship, respectively, in 2014.
