Differentiating in a Crowded Market
As newcomers in the outdoor power equipment category, Senix had significant competition in well-known brands like Milwaukee, Stihl, ECHO and eGO. Senix needed a design language that fought through the noise, communicating their brand standards in a way that differentiated Senix to the Pro Community.
In a crowded category, Senix partnered with Priority Designs in search of a path to bring the brand to life in a way that clearly communicated reliability, power, and attention to detail, with a focus on how these choices help differentiate Senix.
Bridging Brand and Product Design
Visualizing a Brand
Priority Designs started by immersing the design team in what the Senix brand stands for. Importantly, the team also researched the brand positioning of the competition to explore key points of differentiation from a brand and design perspective. Priority Designs helped to translate the Senix brand metrics into design attributes that would visually communicate the brand:
Reliability
- Robust Geometries: The tools feature thick, grounded proportions with wide stances and solid bases. These visual cues suggest stability and durability, reinforcing the idea that Senix tools are built to last.
- Confident Surface Transitions: Clean, uninterrupted transitions between components signal precision and quality, helping communicate a sense of trustworthiness and long-term dependability.
Power
- Angular, Aggressive Form Language: Sharp angles, beveled edges, and forward-leaning silhouettes give the tools a dynamic, purposeful stance. These shapes evoke motion and strength, making the tools look powerful even at rest.
- Exposed Structural Elements: Design choices like visible fasteners and venting details suggest mechanical strength and reinforce the idea of raw, accessible power.
Attention to Detail
- Refined Edge Treatments: Subtle chamfers and fillets soften transitions without compromising the boldness of the form, showing care in how each surface meets the next.
- Integrated Branding Elements: Logos and iconography are embedded into the form rather than simply applied, elevating the perceived quality and reinforcing brand cohesion.
Priority Designs set out on a series of iterative concepts that set products apart and would attract consumer attention.
Award-Winning
Green Industry Pros, the nationally recognized magazine serving landscape professionals, has named Priority Designs a Green Industry Pros 2024 Editor’s Choice Award winner for its execution of a branding and design strategy for the SENIX X6 Cordless series.
The Solution
The Priority Designs’ industrial design team leaned into bold, angular forms and high-contrast color blocking to create a visual identity that feels confident, professional, and distinct. These choices were made intentionally to resonate with the Pro Community and position Senix as a serious contender in the space. Through this effort, Priority Designs provided illustrations for the entire line of Senix power equipment that guided Industrial Design and Engineering through several rounds of brainstorm sessions.
Throughout these brainstorms, the Senix and Priority Designs teams homed in on what it means to represent Senix while balancing the need to be differentiated and eye-catching in both the Pro and big box retail space. In a category dominated by brands like Milwaukee, Stihl, ECHO, and eGO, Senix needed a design language that could cut through the noise.
Outcome
As a result of this partnership, the entire line of Senix outdoor power equipment not only had a stand-out design language that clearly communicated a sense of power and reliability, but each individual piece looked the part of a cohesive family of branded products that were unmistakably Senix.
From immersion into the competitive market through design iteration, the Senix team was able to participate in design revisions to ensure not only awareness, but alignment, which left them with a sense of confidence in the final selection of visual brand language.
Conclusion
Moving forward, Senix outdoor power equipment now has a brand language that can be used for years. As individual products come and go from the product line, the foundational elements defined in this visual brand language will be used to ensure consistent communication of the Senix brand pillars over time. When Pros see a piece of equipment, they’ll know immediately by the design that it’s a Senix tool.
